How to sell digital products / downloads

Updated on 24th June 2023 in Products

Selling digital products or downloads online can be a complex process, but it doesn't have to be. Shoprocket.io makes the entire process simple, secure, and efficient, taking care of file hosting, delivery, and even handling the automatic generation of download links.

Step 1: Login to Your Shoprocket Dashboard

To begin, you'll need to log into your Shoprocket dashboard. This is your central hub for product management, sales tracking, and settings customization.

Step 2: Add Your Digital Product

Once you're in your dashboard, click on the "Add Product" button. This will allow you to fill out the product details:

  • Name: The name of your product.
  • Price: The cost that customers will pay for the product.
  • Category(s): This is where you can group similar products together.
  • Description: A brief summary of the product to let your customers know what they're buying.
  • Image(s): Add images that best represent your product.

After you've filled in these details, click on the "Downloads" tab in the edit product view.

Step 3: Upload Your Digital Files

Here, you can drag and drop all the digital files that you wish to send to the customer when they purchase the product. Shoprocket.io supports all file types and allows a maximum file size of up to 5GB per file, providing plenty of flexibility for a wide range of digital products.

Once your files are uploaded, they can be "bound" to product variations, which is great for things like selling files in different formats or sizes.

Here are the top 10 most common file types sold as digital products along with their descriptions:

  • eBooks - Most commonly in PDF, EPUB, MOBI file formats.
  • Music - Typically in MP3, AAC, or FLAC file formats.
  • Video Content - Usually in MP4, MOV, or AVI file formats. Video content might include webinars, instructional videos, independent films, or stock footage.
  • Online Courses / Educational Content - These can be in various formats, such as PDF for course materials, MP4 for video content, MP3 for audio content.
  • Photographs and Graphics - JPEG, PNG, SVG, and GIF are common file formats.
  • Software - EXE for Windows software, DMG for macOS software, APK for Android apps, IPA for iOS apps.
  • Games - Similar to software, games can come in EXE, DMG, APK, IPA formats, or proprietary formats depending on the platform.
  • 3D Models / Digital Assets - These can be in OBJ, FBX, or STL file formats, among others.
  • Documents / Templates - Usually in DOC/DOCX, XLS/XLSX, PPT/PPTX, or PDF formats. These can be resumes, business templates, legal documents, etc.
  • Audio Books - Typically in MP3 format.

Step 4: Configure Your Store Settings

In your store settings > downloads, you can set the expiry time and download attempts for your digital products. This allows you to control how long the download links are valid and how many times a customer can attempt to download.

Step 5: Embed Your Product

With your product setup complete, you just need to copy and paste Shoprocket's embed code into your website or blog. This will instantly render the full product into that page, along with Shoprocket's cart and full checkout system.

The beauty of this system is that once an order is paid and payment is confirmed, download links are dynamically generated and automatically emailed to your customer. As a seller, you don't need to worry about any of the logistics – Shoprocket.io takes care of everything for you.

By using Shoprocket, selling digital products online becomes a breeze. With secure hosting, dynamic link generation, and automatic delivery, you can focus on creating great content, knowing the sales process is in safe hands.
